Description
My Silver Gelatin Sepia toned print of "Baddi Amma" Old Grandmother, got selected in the the 35th Annual "Commitment to Excellence" juried Art Exhibition Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce for exhibition between Aug 13-22. I entered in this prestigious show for the first time, all are invited to the show. Its the same print that was in student show at Windward Community College, Kaneohe last year and had the best comment from Michele Van Hessen, House of Representatives Minority Caucus - Media Director, visited the exhibit and told my teacher and gallery manager that she thought my photo of the old woman was the best in the exhibit of total 167 art works.
This photograph was taken with manual camera Promaster 2500 and developed in the darkroom on an 8 x 10" Ilford pearl paper as well as on 11 x 14" Fiber paper. The prints were also toned sepia to protect them further. This picture is part of my series "Faces and Places in India" that were taken during my travels and visits home to India. I was visiting my maternal grandmother's house with my sister and my niece in Panjab in India. The house my mother grew up in belongs to my uncle now and when we were visiting, my uncle and aunt were not in town and the house was locked. The neighbors front of the house (the old houses are still in small gali, streets where not only you have neighbors on both sides, but also in front and back) came out and asked us who were. When they came to know us, they invited us in and offered us water, chai, lemonade as it was hot outside. This old woman was their grandmother who must be in her 90's and she sat outside and didn't speak much. However, she was aware of our visit and was happy when we asked her of her wellbeing and allowed me to take her picture. Reminded me of my own grandmother before she passed away. I still wonder how she is doing because its already few years since I took this picture.
Note: Please REDUCE the image (if ned to) to fit the 5x7 CARDS, so that the image is NOT cropped to keep the integrity of the original image.
